Bessie Head wrote some of the best African literature we have been blessed with. She wrote ‘When Rain Clouds Gather’. It is a book about traditionalism vs progress in Africa and how traditionalism works to keep the poor in Africa poor through a system that benefits the priviledged so that they are always dependent on them. Her book conveys strongly the message that the power resides with the people and that if we the people harness this power, we can progress. This is still true in many ways. some not so obvious.
It was so brave of her to write this book in one of the most turbulent times in her home country South Africa and even braver that she did not falter under pressure-she stood by her book, she stood by her truth.
